Northland Regional Council is to meet Northland oyster farmers to discuss the viability of the industry.

MAF closed the oyster beds of 14 farmers in the Waikare Inlet in 2001 due to norovirus contamination which the farmers blame on the Kawakawa sewage treatment plant.

They sued Far North District Council over the issue but lost in the High Court at Auckland leaving them owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills.

The farmers may also have to pay up to $3 million to clean up the water if they are forced to abandon their farms.

They voted last Thursday not to appeal the High Court finding.

Regional council chair Mark Farnsworth says it is possible the farms will have to close and the farmers need certainty over the issue.

He says efforts must also be made to find the source of the pollution.

The regional council is currently bringing a case against Far North District Council under the Resource Management Act for sewage spills from the Waitangi sewer pipe in February and April 2006.

It is also prosecuting the district council for a sewage spill in the Tarawhateroa Stream which polluted Rangaunu Harbour north of Kaitaia, in November, 2005.

In May 2006, the district council decided to replace the pipeline between Waitangi and Paihia after it broke twice in three months. The first spillage was on February 16. The second on April 8 involved 2,000 cubic metres of sewage and was undetected for two days. The cost of the pipeline will be $5.7 million.
