Northern Mindanao will soon have its first mariculture park in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region X (BFAR-10) Regional Director Arlene Pantanosas said her office has conducted an initial survey and ocular inspection of the area and it turned out to be a feasible site for a mariculture park.

"We just have to conduct further assessments on physical and biological factors to be able to come up with more reliable benchmark data before we will proceed with the project. The municipality of Balingasag also needs to pass a municipal ordinance declaring the areas from Barangay Hermano to Barangay 6 as a mariculture park," she added.

According to BFAR Central Office Assistant Director Gil Adora, a mariculture zone/park is an area in the sea, from 100-400 hectares or more in size and has a communal storm-resistant mooring system and boundary markers subdivided into individual "farm plots" for marine aquaculture activities such as fish cage operation and seaweeds growing.

Some possible fish species that can be cultured in the mariculture zone are: siganid (danggit), bangus, caranx (mamsa), grouper (lapu-lapu), seabass (apahap), saline tilapia and red snapper (maya-maya). Other marine species like seaweeds, pearl oyster, oyster (talaba), mussel (tahong), sea urchin and abalone can also be cultured as long as they are feasible.

The establishment of a mariculture park opens a lot of investment and employment opportunities not only to those directly involved in the culture of marine species but also to the ancillary industries linked to it such as fingerling production, cage installation, feeds and ice supplier and others. The area can even be an eco-tourism site, too.

Pantanosas emphasized, however, that establishing a mariculture park is not only for big time investors. According to her, there are a lot of options that fisherfolks can participate in. They can choose to be either an employee or an entrepreneur. They can work as cage fabricators, caretakers or harvesters. They may also form an association to be able to put up a cage.

Once everything is in place, BFAR-10 will initiate a one-hectare mooring system which can accommodate 36 units of 10x10 cages. It will also operate one cage as demo project and another for research and development.

For now, the local government unit of Balingasag is planning to go on an educational tour to Samar so they can get valuable inputs on the establishment and management of mariculture parks.
