Senior representatives from the National Prawn Company (NPC) recently met with oil giant Aramco’s experts in Al-Laith to collaborate in environmental management. NPC would benefit from its colleague’s experience with environmental care and marine ecosystems in particular.

Aramco executives had gathered at NPC’s site for a mid-year meeting to assess the performance of Aramco’s Pipeline, Distribution and Terminal Division within the Western Province. A presentation led by Ahmed Al-Saadi, vice president of the Division, that was given to Aramco executives prompted the meeting between the two firms.

Following the meeting, Ahmad bin Rasheed Al-Balaa of NPC gave a presentation on his company, including its point of view on the development of the prawn industry and company plans for the future. Executives of the two companies subsequently held further discussions.

NPC is now working on a massive expansion project that will enlarge its output to over 40,000 tonnes of top quality prawns per year in an area about five times as big as Bermuda. The project will be completed in a few years’ time.

On the second day of the meeting, the delegation was taken on a tour of NPC’s operations and the different stages of prawn production at its facilities.

NPC is a client of Aramco’s fuel oil and diesel, which the prawn company uses in its electricity generation station plus its land and marine equipment, reports TradeArabia News Service.

The National Prawn Company is one of the largest fully integrated prawn farming operations in the world. It is based on the shore of the Red Sea near Al-Laith, a fishing town south of Jeddah, on a desert coastal strip.

It is a privately owned company that currently produces 14,000 tonnes of white prawns (Penaeus indicus) per year, operating 12 farms of between 25-28 ponds each, and each about 10 ha in size.

NPC sells it prawns both domestically and in all key global markets, including Japan, Korea, Spain, the UK and the US.
