Baja California Sur abalone promoted in Asia

 MEXICO
Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 02:20 (GMT + 9)

The sector dedicated to the production of abalone in Baja California Sur (BCS) has a fund of MXN 6 million (USD 470,000) to promote this mollusc in the markets of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

This was announced by the President of the Federation of Cooperative Societies of the Fishing Industry of Baja California Sur, Jesus Verdugo Verduzco, after the administration by the governor Narciso Agundez of the head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), Francisco González Mayorga.

According to the fisheries manager, the intervention and management capacity of Agundez was instrumental in achieving this important support, which will allow the entry and promotion of the brand 'California Mexico' in one of the world's most demanding markets.

He also recalled that local authorities have long faced a comprehensive plan that provides for the modernisation of boats, outboard engines, fishing gear and processing systems and infrastructure needed to develop fishing more easily.

Promotional travels faced by the State Government and the support given by the federal authorities have been instrumental in improving the prospects of fish exports to the Asian market from Baja California Sur, Tribuna Los Cabos reports.

Verduzco Verdugo hopes that within a short period of time, BCS abalone producers will be signing trade agreements with distributors in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

In March, the governments of Baja California and BCS began legal and regulatory processes for the designation of origin of Mexican abalone produced in both places.

The authorities of the two states expect these agreements to help prevent piracy of this mollusc in the Asian market and in the US, where it has a high demand and high market value.
