Shrimp ban begins

MEXICO
Thursday, May 27, 2010, 00:40 (GMT + 9)

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishery and Foods (SAGARPA) has kicked off the start of a shrimp ban in the lagoon systems of the Gulf of Mexico, from the mouth of Rio Bravo, in Tamaulipas, to the mouth of Rio Coatzacoalcos, in Veracruz State.

The measure entered into force at midnight Wednesday 26 May and will finalise next 10 June, although it may be extended some days more.

The ban was instituted taking into consideration the opinion of the seafood productive sector and of the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (CONAPESCA).

The authority also established a ban for the catch of this crustacean from 1 May to 30 September in the state of Tabasco.

At the start of the prohibition in the lagunaria system, permitholders, cooperatives and the other shrimp retailers will have three working days to inventory the product they have in stock.

SAGARPA also set forth a ban of the marine water resource:

From 1 May to 15 August: in the area from the mouth of Rio Bravo to the mouth of Rio Coatzacoalcos;
From 1 May to 31 October: in the waters included from the mouth of Rio Coatzacoalcos to the border with Belize, except for Atlantic seabob (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) fishing with small-scale vessels in marine waters of the coastal strip in front of the states of Campeche and Tabasco. In both cases, the completion date of the ban could be modified per research findings furnished by the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA);
From 1 May to 30 September: in the coastal strip in front of the states of Campeche and Tabasco, for the Atlantic seabob fishery using small scale vessels.
Personnel of CONAPESCA and the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) will be in charge of monitoring that fishers respect the ban.
