Purchase of Chilean salmon firm set for three months

PERU
Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 21:30 (GMT + 9)

Executives of the fish firm Tecnologica de Alimentos SA (TASA), of Peru, plan on entering the Chilean salmon farming sector with the acquisition of a national company.

According to the consultant of the top management of TASA, Humberto Speziani, “It is in the strategic plan of the group to be part of the aquaculture area, and in Chile, there is a serious window of opportunity in salmon farming, since it is a market that has been in growth, and in addition, at the international level, a great demand exists for the product that will continue on the rise.”

"We have still not knocked on anybody’s door, thus there is no definition on the matter,” however, “in no more than three months, nonetheless, we will know if we go or not, and if we do it, who will be the seller and the amount involved. In fact, it is already being worked on. At the moment, investment bankers have visited us, some of which are in Chile and others not,” the executive continued.

Similarly, he made it clear that “before such time, the specialists of the group will present us with a study that will determine the path to follow. Only then will a discussion be held in the board.”

Upon being consulted on the kind of company they will acquire in Chile, Speziani pointed out :“I do not believe that it interests the group to go in as a minority [shareholder]. At the same time, the possibility of letting a business grow can be interesting, with which it is possible a mid-sized or big firm will be acquired. We do discard a small company without probabilities of expansion,” Estrategia reports.

He further mentioned as possible companies that sell to AquaChile, Invertec Pesquera Mar de Chiloe (Invermar) and Multiexport Foods SA

Those companies “have more probabilities of being in [our] sights. Those in foreign hands I do not believe will want to let go of their business, which will recover as from next year in the country.”

For example, “Pesquera Itata is not going to sell, since it is a family-run firm, there is no chance. The banks have given us a list of candidates, which are the important players of Chile, that are more or less a half dozen,” he added.

He also clarified “we can enter any of them, though it may have some financial difficulties, we don’t have an issue on the matter.”

Currently, TASA has 86 boats and 16 processing plants but is using only 60 boats now because of quotas on anchovy fishing in Peru's Pacific Ocean, following the implementation of the individual system of quotas.
