Abalone fishers partner with Asian distributors

The wild abalone producers of Baja California faced an economic blow in 2009 following years of solid sales overseas, with the price of the mollusc falling 20 per cent.

The cooperatives of this Mexican state began to note problems last year as each case of abalone dropped from USD 1,045 in value to less than USD 800.

Before the downturn, the 10 cooperatives that supply the resource in Baja California generated annual sales of more than USD 25 million.

In 2009, the abalone’s main buyer was the firm Ocean Garden, tied to the Mexican Industrial Fisheries Group, which limited itself to acquiring 5,000 cases of a total of 25,000 produced annually.

In a bid to overcome financial straits, the National Abalone Fishery Cooperative (PNA) began establishing alliances with its Asian distributors, to boost sales from Hong Kong.

According to the PNA’s director-general, Felipe Ruelas, they also allied with three fish firms to can its production under the Cooperative’s own, Cedmex namebrand, which has been exported to the Asian continent for 10 years.

In other news, the manager of PNA Commercialisation, Celina Dominguez, revealed that its line of banking credit had to be increased from USD 400,000 to USD 1 million, CNN reports.

At present, abalone from Baja California is the second most expensive in the world, behind the national variety from Japan.

Rodrigo de la Serna, Ocean Garden’s director of Operations, says that its company is pleased that competition has arisen.

Lat March, the Governments of Baja California Sur and Baja California launched the legal and normative processes to obtain the denomination of origin of Mexican abalone produced in both places.

The authorities of both states hope that these agreements help to avoid the piracy of this mollusc in the Asian market and in the US, where it is in high demand and has a high commercial value.
