Aquaculture boost in Minas Gerais

BRAZIL
Friday, April 16, 2010, 16:20 (GMT + 9)

Through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry (MPA), the Federal Government plans on providing a strong stimulus for the seafood production of Minas Gerais, and aquaculture, in particular.

As part of this plan, concessions for 229 aquaculture areas in the Furnas reserve and 163 areas in Três Marias will be granted, according to a resolution published 12 April in the Diario Oficial de la Union.

Each area includes 1,500 square metres and has a maximum annual production capacity of 48 tonnes.

“Minas is one of the states with the most hydric and aquaculture potential domestically and today produces approximately 6,000 tonnes per year of farmed fish,”said Felipe Matias, secretary of Aquaculture Planning and Ordinance of the MPA.

"We want Minas to grow in this activity, which produces a noble and healthy food, and also generates more jobs and income," he added.

The fish production in Furnas is estimated to reach 10,992 tonnes annually and 7,824 tonnes in Três Marias.

In this stage, the 392 lots will be allocated to groups that earns up to five minimum wages.

The activity will have to generate three jobs per aquaculture area. It is anticipated that about 1,176 direct jobs will be created altogether, besides many others related to the fish production chain.

Each family will have the opportunity to manage up to 40 net-tanks of four cubic metres. The species selected for farming must be present in the warehouses, in accordance with the studies of the aquaculture division and legislation in effect.

The Brazilian Government will support the aquaculture parks through training and logistics initiatives.

Those interested in participating in the aquaculture operation in the new areas has until 31 May 2010 to submit their proposals to the MPA.
