The general manager of the National Association of Fish and Shellfish Canners (ANFACO), Juan Manuel Vieites, in Brussels, defended the interests of the seafood processing industry of wild capture and aquaculture from the trade and market point of view.

During the talk ‘the Reformation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP): Commercial aspects and organisation of markets,’ organised by the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament, the official stressed that the community industry “wants to compete,” but that everyone do so “under the same norms and the same monitoring.”

In addition, he put forth the need to reinforce inspections in processing plants and in vessels to guarantee that imports of raw material and elaborated products fulfil all norms in effect.

A study made two years ago revealed that 65 per cent of tuna products processed from companies of third-party countries did not observe strict Community rules in diverse categories, Vieites recalled.

Meanwhile, the representatives of the European Commission (EC) that attended the meeting emphasised that the European sanitary requirements “are the most demanding in the world,” EFE reports.

The Secretary General of ANFACO protested that the future of “all the links" of the fishing sector be guaranteed and he said that the CFP can be successful if it “is totally associated to the market" and boasts stable rules that facilitate investment.

Meanwhile, Francisco Teixeira, member of the Organisation of Fresh Fish Producers of Marin (Pontevedra), warned that the producers today must tackle low prices of fish on the wholesale market and an increase in costs.

"Together, we must obtain a way to develop this fishing sustainably," he indicated.

In other news, “the data of the first quarter of 2010 points to exports reactivating,” Vieites said.

The executive said that the sector “awaits [the results of the present fiscal year] with confidence ” for in spite of the crisis “we have to eat ”, and the tins of canned products are “very versatile,” El Correo Gallego reports.

According to ANFACO statistics, Spanish production of canned and semi-canned seafood products reached a volume of 354,179 tonnes last year, 1.95 per cent more than in 2008. The value of these products registered an inter-annual increase of only 0.09 per cent, in going from EUR 1,299,839 to EUR 1,300,957.

Of the total canning production of last year, the country exported 127,000 tonnes (35 per cent), which reflects a reduction of 9.09 per cent with respect to 2008.

In terms of value, exports of canned products generated EUR 483.5 million in revenue, 10.63 per cent less than in 2008.
