Aquaculture alliances with Ecuador, Vietnam take shape

VENEZUELA
Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 14:30 (GMT + 9)

Venezuela and Ecuador will set up three binational companies of aquaculture, mining and cacao, as part of more than 30 signed agreements of joint cooperation between both countries.

According to the announcement made by Ecuadorian minister of Foreign Relations, Ricardo Patino, and Venezuelan Nicholas Maduro, the constitution of the three big companies will translate into 51 per cent of shareholder ownership of state companies for Ecuador and 49 per cent for Venezuela.

In the case of the aquaculture company, Patino revealed that joint projects for tilapia breeding in Ecuador and mussels in Venezuela will be launched in a few days.

Meanwhile, the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, stressed the potential of the fishing company Pescalba, formed as part of the agreements of the Mixed Fisheries Company of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA)

The new association, integrated by Cuba and Venezuela, has the aim of guaranteeing the provision of tuna and other marine species to both countries.

With a current fleet of six vessels, the bi-national grouping operates in waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Chavez emphasised the benefits of the mixed company, which will sell products originating from the sea at reasonable prices for the community and will manufacture vessels, Prensa Latina reports.

The Venezuelan president also mentioned that in only a year, artisanal fishing increased 14 per cent, following the prohibition of industrial trawl fishing or rastropesca.

During the transmission of the dominical programme Alo Presidente, Chavez also disclosed that USD 32.8 million will be invested in six aquaculture projects with Ecuador and USD 3.3 million in the development of two aquaculture projects with Vietnam.

Similarly he proposed launching tuna exports.

"The tuna that we are producing is ideal to take to China, Russia, Belarus, North America and Central America,” the Head of State said.

"Venezuelan tuna is the best in the world, many people like it. We are going to take it to other countries, ”he added.

Meanwhile, Gilberto Gimenez, president of the Socialist Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INSOPESCA), commented that the cold storage cellars of Pescalba are operating at 9.75 per cent of their capacity.

The official said that the company has the capacity to maintain 1,200 tonnes of fish in good condition, but has only 117 tonnes in storage, which affects commercialisation, El Tiempo reports.
