Ecuadorian shrimp imports soar 165 pct in five years

CHILE

Profound changes were registered over the last five years in the industry targeting the import and commercialisation of shrimp, namely, the massification of the consumption of this crustacean.

In 2009 Chile imported 1,800 tonnes of shrimp from Ecuador, that is, 165 per cent more than in 2004, when it acquired around 680 tonnes, relates data furnished by the National Customs Service.

The shrimp fisher sector estimates that Ecuadorian shrimp worth USD 15 million were imported in 2009.

For the commercial manager of Kamaron Bay, Rodrigo Izquierdo, the massification of shrimp consumption is due to a drop in price around the world, among other factors.

Plus the low prices of shrimp originating from Ecuador were observed as a result of the entry of Chinese producers that offer the resource at a lower value.

The economic recession caused the leading shrimp consumer – the United States – to lower its product purchases, which is why worldwide prices dropped, Izquierdo also explained to El Mercurio.

According to Pedro Martinez Berceruelo, commercial manager of Ecuadorian Foods, the value of shrimp fell 30 per cent over the last five years.

Juan Carlos Marin, general manager of Empagran,“The profile of the consumer was previously ABC1, but it has been massified; the size of the market has grown."

In addition, the introduction of new products has picked up, like shrimp of 9.1 centimetres, which at present are more popular than ‘shrimp tails.'

As far as the sustained growth of companies over the last few years despite the crisis, the Empagran company stands out, invoicing USD 3.5 million last year, a number equivalent to 350 tonnes of Ecuadorian shrimp.

The company Mar Verde also failed to note the effects of the crisis in importing 180 tonnes, which is also why its growth held at 40 per cent.

Meanwhile, growth during the past year of Ecuadorian Foods was of 25 per cent; whereas Kamaron Bay estimated a sustained increase of 15 per cent over the last few years.

Currently, market leadership is held by Empagram, Comercial Oceano and Don Camaron; and Procam launched a major sales campaign directed at retailers.
