Lands expropriated for Pescanova subsidiary

SPAIN
Thursday, February 18, 2010, 23:50 (GMT + 9)

The Xunta de Galicia initiated proceedings for the compulsory expropriation of lands necessary to carry out the expansion of the turbot fish farm owned by Insuiña SL in Lago beach, in Xove (Lugo).

The Diario Oficial de Galicia published the resolution by which the file for the embargo of lands is opened to public view in considering that the approval of the sectorial plan “follows the declaration of public utility – of the surface area affected – for the effects of compulsory expropriation.”

The deed-holders of the affected assets and all persons and entities interested have a term of 15 days to present allegations they consider opportune before the Directorate-General of Marine Resources Ordinance and Management.

In April 2009, the Council of the Xunta approved the sectorial plan of supramunicipal incidence for the expansion of the fish farm of the Pescanova, subsidiary dedicated to the pre-fattening and fattening of turbot.

The plans of Insuiña, a subsidiary of the Galician multinational Pescanova, are to increase the surface area of the plant located at Lago beach to 273,000 square metres ,and reach a production superior to 1,900 tonnes of flat fish per year, Faro de Vigo reports.

It is anticipated that the Council of Marine Affairs will acquire lands and cede them for use by means of administrative concession, for a maximum of 30 years, to the interested company.

This Pescanova project is one of three included in the Galician Aquaculture Plan.

Other initiatives include the construction of a macroplant in Cape Touriñan, in the zone of Muxia, and the expansion of a turbot fry production farm in Mougas, in Oia (Pontevedra).

The previous government of the Xunta had initially rejected the Touriñan project due to the “tremendous environmental impact” that it would cause in the zone, in invading protected lands that formed part of the Natura Network, but the new authorities eventually gave it their approval.
