Myanmar; Farming and Exporting Mud Crabs

In January 2008, following the success of an experimental crab farm, the Department of Fisheries announced the establishment of a crab farming zone in Kyauk Tan Township, south of the city of Yangon.  Farmers are already exporting soft-shell crabs to Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore for around $6 per kilogram.

Several companies have plans to start 1,000-acre farms.  One company has already begun operating a farm that expects to produce 20 to 30 tons of crabs per month.  Total production could hit 80 tons a month when all the new projects start operations.  The new farms will require 400,000 juvenile crabs a day for stocking.
