Oyster producers aim exports at European market

Thursday, September 23, 2010, 04:20 (GMT + 9)

After the environmental disaster caused by the oil slick on the east coast of the United States, numerous producers of oysters and other bivalve mollusks from Baja California took the opportunity to enhance their shipments abroad, especially to Europe.

The sector is working with the national government to complete the neccesary health and safety processes to achieve certification to enable them export oysters to the EU market, said Sergio Guevara, president of the State Committee on Aquaculture Health.

Currently, France's largest producer and consumer of Europe is experiencing a disease (a type of herpes virus) in oysters, which affected 80 per cent of shellfish cultivation.

Aquaculture producers estimate that production can grow by up to four or five times if they get beyond the requirements and increase their exports.

For now, the oysters are mainly aimed at Mexico City, Cancun and other resorts in the country as well as America, where they arrive in less than 24 hours by road, reports

Oyster producers are making great efforts to maintain healthy populations in their farms in order to increase production and meet the international demand.

France produces around 140,000 tonnes per year, which are consumed in the domestic market. But because of viral diseases, it is expected that during December this year, there will be a deficit of production.

If this happens, it is likely to increase French imports of the product, a situation that could benefit employers in Mexico.
