China alleges ban on seafood is ‘indiscriminate'

China cannot accept an “indiscriminate'' and automatic detention of four kinds of Chinese seafood by the U.S. and a ban on importing them, a top Chinese official in charge of quality inspections said in a statement in Beijing.

"China has always taken a cooperative spirit with the U.S. when it comes to quality of imported American goods,'' Li Changjiang, director of the State Administration of Quality Inspection, said in a statement posted on the agency's Web site. "We hope the U.S. would do the same when it comes to our products.''

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on June 28 it would detain three types of Chinese farm-raised fish, catfish, basa and dace, as well as shrimp and eel unless suppliers could prove the shipments didn't contain harmful residues.

China has "already'' taken measures to solve the problems, the statement cited Li as saying to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt in a telephone conversation on June 29. The U.S. should let the exports continue after checking the sanitation certificates issued by China's quality inspectors, Li said.

Chinese inspectors also have detected "many substandard'' foodstuffs among imports from the U.S. and work with their U.S. counterparts in a "cooperative'' spirit without turning the incidents into disputes, Li said.

The U.S. will be sending a team to China to negotiate a solution to the seafood ban, the statement said.
