A MEETING to review the concept of trans-national generic promotion activities, specifically concerning seabass and seabream, supporting both market development and sectoral communication activities, has been held in Athens.

Coordinated by the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), the meeting was attended by representatives of the EU Mediterranean fish farming sector (Greece, Spain, France and Italy) and their respective Ministries of Fisheries.

There was agreement that a long-term view is required for such actions to be effective and, for the first time, multi-lateral cooperation between the National Ministries of Mediterranean EU Member States was explored in depth.

With the completion of the national strategic plans for aquaculture development being imminent, within the finalisation of the European Fisheries Fund that covers the period 2007-2013, the FEAP representatives reported the resolutions made on this topic, noting the priority for wide communication actions directed towards the European consumer.

Attention was drawn to the will to better coordinate the promotion and communication actions that have been achieved individually and to provide a better focus on potential markets, particularly for those States with export activities.

The meeting decided to create an ad-hoc platform for communication on Mediterranean aquaculture composed of representatives from the four Member States concerned, under the coordination of the FEAP. In the immediate future, a schedule of actions and activities for the forthcoming two years will be defined so as to give substance to the ideas developed. The first meeting of this communication platform will be held in February 2007.

John Stephanis, President of the FEAP and the Federation of Greek Maricultures, said: “It gives me great pleasure to announce this ground-breaking decision as we have been looking to develop such a common European action for several years. We believe that this will be of immense benefit to the Mediterranean fish farmers. I have to congratulate the representatives of the Ministries of Fisheries for their foresight and commitment to the development of our sector.”
