It might look homegrown, taste similar and even be labeled as such, but many consumers don't realize that the catfish on their plate is actually a Chinese import that is increasingly drying up Louisiana's catfish farming industry.

The Mississippi-based Catfish Institute reports Chinese catfish imports doubled during the first eight months of 2006 compared to the same period last year.

According to information collected by the LSU AgCenter, Louisiana, a major catfish consumer, is the fourth leading producer of catfish in the United States behind Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama.

In 2005, Louisiana's catfish industry was reported to occupy about 6,000 acres with a production of roughly 27.7 million pounds of catfish production annually.

However, the AgCenter reports Louisiana's catfish production has been in a sharp decline in recent years, down from about 18,000 acres farmed and more than 90 million pounds produced 10 years ago.

During that time, Louisiana's revenue from catfish production also dropped significantly, from about $75 million to $20 million, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs. Industry observers blame much of the loss on fish imported from Asia.

A few years ago, Catfish Institute President Roger Barlow said Vietnamese basa fish, often passed off as American-grown catfish, were a major problem for the industry. These days, it's Chinese catfish that's flooding the market.
