Malaysia is planning to expand nationwide Fish Protech, a method of breeding fish in recycled water within buildings, in a bid to boost the country's aquaculture output.

Malaysian Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Tuesday that the technology, developed by Australia and being on a trial run at Sepang in the state of Selangor, was appropriate for Malaysia.

The Malaysia Fisheries Development Board had formed a joint venture with Fish Protech Pty Ltd of Australia to develop the system at places like Sepang, he said.

The joint-venture is working on the technology that reportedly entails growing fish indoor using layers of biological and technical water recycling system which is efficient and environment-friendly.

Muhyiddin said that although the initial cost of the project was high, it would be cost effective in the long run as the farmers could reap good returns on their investment.

The fish harvest under the system are of high quality, healthy and meet the Australia Quarantine Inspection System (AQIS) accreditations, he said.

Developed 15 years ago in Australia by John Don, Fish Protech Pty Ltd had transferred the technology to China, Brunei and Malaysia, local media said.

Muhyiddin said his ministry hoped to introduce the system to fishermen and farmers throughout the country once the system was fully developed.
