Senators reintroduce legislation to ban GE salmon

UNITED STATES
Wednesday, February 02, 2011, 01:30 (GMT + 9)

US Senators Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) this week introduced legislation to ban genetically engineered (GE) salmon. This legislation plus a companion bill requiring the labelling of GE fish pertain to AquaBounty Technologies’ GE salmon currently under review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Frankenfish threatens our wild stocks, their habitat, our food safety, and would bring economic harm to Alaska’s wild salmon fishermen,” Begich contested. “Genetically modified (GM) salmon, the first such hybrid to be considered for human consumption, is risky, unprecedented and unnecessary.”

Murkowski expressed her strong opposition to the administration’s approval of GE salmon, calling its mere consideration of it “completely irresponsible” given the FDA’s failure to examine the impact the fish would have on Alaska’s wild salmon stocks.

“The FDA has not studied the environmental effects, let alone the economic impacts on the salmon and seafood markets that would result from approval,” she stressed.

This week’s bill introduction is in fact a reintroduction of legislation that Begich sponsored and Murkowski co-sponsored in the last Congressional session.

The FDA has not communicated when it plans to make its decision on AquaBounty’s GM salmon proposal, and the senators are striving to move their legislation swiftly.

“We’re going to keep trying,” said Begich’s press secretary, Julie Hasquet, reports Juneau Empire. “We weren’t going to give up just because the session ended.”

Last September, Begich and Murkowski were two of 10 senators who sent a letter to the FDA citing concerns regarding the review process and the questionable safety of approving a GE animal for human consumption.

AquaBounty’s proposal to produce “frankenfish,” which the FDA is considering, entails a hybrid Atlantic salmon modified with a Chinook salmon growth gene and an antifreeze gene from ocean pout, an eel-like fish. The genetic modification lets the farmed salmon grow much faster and larger than it would naturally.

Apart from Begich and Murkowski, the legislation to ban GE fish in the US is co-sponsored by Sen Patty Murray (D-Washington), and the bill requiring labelling in case the GE fish is approved for human consumption is co-sponsored by Sen Murray and Sen Ron Wyden (D-Oregon).
