Regional organization cuts quota for horse mackerel in South Pacific

Member countries of the Regional Organization for South Pacific Fisheries (ORP) have accepted a recommendation by the Interim Scientific Committee to lower quotas for horse mackerel (Trachurus murphy) in the area by 40 per cent this year, compared to those in 2010.

The delegation from Chile at the Second Preparatory Conference of the ORP's Plenary Meeting was able to establish an interim measure to limit fishing for mackerel by state.

"We adopted a catch reduction of 40 per cent for the year 2011, that is, each state will only capture up to 60 per cent of what they captured in 2010. For the Government of Chile that is an achievement, because we could not accept a quota greater than that established by Chile," said the head of the Subsecretary of Fisheries, Pablo Galilea.

Also, participants at the meeting held in Cali, Colombia, decided that they will conduct an evaluation of stock levels this year.

Based on the results, they will revise the measure and define a new catch limit if necessary, reports the newspaper La Tercera.

For its part, the National Fisheries Society (Sonapesca) said the new interim measures were not adopted by consensus, as they were rejected by Cuba, Venezuela, Korea and the Faroe Islands.

"China, surprisingly, at the last minute, reserved its approval to consult with their authorities, and will answer to the interim secretariat. Without doubt, the lack of consensus achieved will weaken the organization in the future, especially if China does not concur with him," stated a source from Sonapesca, reports strategy.

After the meeting, the Chilean delegates proposed that Chile should host the Third Preparatory Conference of the Entry into Force of the convention, which will be held between 30 January to 3 February 2012.
