Seafood calculator explains benefits vs risks of eating fish

The nonprofit Centre for Consumer Freedom (CCF) has improved its popular HowMuchFish.com seafood calculator containing 24 seafood species and thus representing 98 per cent of the commercial seafood eaten in the US. This is the only calculator on the Internet that offers to clear up the controversial information regarding the health benefits versus the risks of eating seafood.

CCF’s user friendly website now provides important nutritional data on omega-3 fatty acids, cholesterol, sodium and the calorie-counts of the most popular seafood among US consumers. The re-launched HowMuchFish.com will be displayed at the International Seafood and Health Conference in Australia this November.

CCF commissioned the Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) last month to survey women in the US about seafood. Fifty per cent of the respondents think that, "even though fish is full of important nutrients, mercury and other contaminants make it risky to eat," while 41 per cent, "wish there was a simple Internet website to help [them] sort out the risks and benefits of eating more fish."

HowMuchFish.com provides the public with details about the nutritional information of seafood, thus helping such consumers sort out the risks and benefits of increasing their seafood consumption.

For example, the website informs that from a single 6-oz serving of canned light tuna, the average woman can obtain 92 per cent of her Recommended Daily Intake of omega-3 fatty acids, 84 per cent of her vitamin B12 needs and 86 per cent of her protein requirements in 198 calories.

Scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health say these health benefits overshadow any health risks posed to humans, (even pregnant women and children), from eating seafood.

"This online calculator finally reconciles all the conflicting information about seafood the consumers are hearing," said David Martosko, CCF's Director of Research.

"Seafood has always been a super food, especially considering how omega-3s protects against heart disease. It's amazing to see all the health benefits we can get from fish, and how tiny the possible health risks are in comparison," he added.

Even though the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that Americans eat oily fish "at least twice a week," the HowMuchFish.com seafood calculator suggests that it would be healthful to eat this kind of fish even more frequently.

"Eating seafood is one of the smartest things you can do for your health, but media reports about health risks are impossible to avoid. Putting the benefits and risks side-by-side on a simple website is something the federal government should have done long ago," Martosko concluded.
