Vietnamese and Chinese fish destroyed due to cholera outbreaks

The Secretariat of Health has issued a health alert in the Pacific and Baja California coasts and ordered the detention of all loads of tilapia and pangasius from Vietnam and China, because of cholera outbreaks detected in these countries.

So far, the port controls have found 44 tonnes of the species contaminated with the cholera bacterium (Vibrio cholerae), which will soon be destroyed, said Ricardo Zamarrón Guevara, director of the Protection Against Health Risks of the Secretariat of Health.

The official has declared to the population that foreign fish which are currently being sold in Baja California are free from contaminants.

Some tilapia and basa specimens had been consumed before the alert was issued, through 17 August, but there was no contamination, nor has it caused effects on people, because there were no cases of cholera in the state, reported El Mexicano.

Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova, urged people to remain calm, because so far, there are no cases of cholera in the country.

Monitoring at Mexican ports will continue until the federal Health Department says otherwise.
