Constant growth in seafood exports for last 9 months

Seafood exports have seen uninterrupted growth for the last 22 months except for October 2009. Exports in July grew by more than NOK 500 million (EUR 63.2 million) or 15 per cent from July 2009 and totalled NOK 3.8 billion (EUR 480 million).

The value of exports YTD (year-to-date) reached NOK 27.9 billion (EUR 3.5 billion), up by NOK 4 billion (EUR 505.3 million) on the same period last year, according to the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC).

In July, salmon exports grew in value by NOK 565 million (EUR 71.4 million) or 26 per cent to NOK 2.7 billion (EUR 341.1 million). For this YTD, the total is NOK 16.6 billion (EUR 2.1 billion), up by NOK 3.8 billion (EUR 480 million) or 30 per cent versus the same period in 2009.

“In July, Norwegian Salmon accounted for no less than 71 per cent of all seafood exports from Norway,” explains market analyst Paul Aandahl from NSEC.

In July, the average export price for fresh whole salmon was NOK 39.50 (EUR 4.99) per kg -- NOK 1 (EUR 0.13) up on the average price in June. For the YTD, the average price is NOK 36.14 (EUR 4.57) per kg, up by NOK 4.43 (EUR 0.56) against the same period last year.

In July, the value of salmon exports to the US reached NOK 220 million (EUR 27.8 million), NOK 89 million (EUR 11.2 million) or 67 per cent higher than the same period last year, attributable to growth in salmon fillet exports. Fresh salmon fillet export volumes grew by 10 per cent to 1,832 tonnes, while exports of frozen salmon fillets rose by 117 per cent to 1,039 tonnes.

Other major growth markets for salmon were Russia, up in value by NOK 81 million (EUR 10.2 million), and Denmark by NOK 52 million (EUR 6.6 million) versus July 2009. France is still the biggest market for salmon, with a total export share valued at 14 per cent or NOK 382 million (EUR 48.3 million).

July showed exports of fjord trout at NOK 96 million (EUR 12 million), a 46 per cent drop, and volume fell by 55 per cent to 2,160 tonnes.

Herring exports in July totalled NOK 91 million (EUR 11.5 million), down by 15 per cent.

This YTD, the value of herring exports is NOK 2 billion (EUR 252.6 million), a 9 per cent fall compared to the same period in 2009.

The value of mackerel exports was NOK 19 million (EUR 2.4 million) in July, down by 10 per cent. This YTD mackerel exports totaled NOK 509 million (EUR 64.3 million), 24 per cent lower than in the same period last year.

In July, the value of exports of frozen cod totalled NOK 143 million (EUR 18.1 million), a growth of NOK 29 million (EUR 3.7 million) or 26 per cent compared to July 2009.

Exports of fresh cod skided by 20 per cent in July, compared to July 2009. However, for the YTD exports of fresh cod are up by 11 per cent, with the value of exports of whole cod up by 21 per cent and exports of cod fillets up by just over 3 per cent.
