Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) engaged in aquaculture plans can now apply for grant assistance at a rate of up to 40 per cent of eligible investment costs from the Commercial Aquaculture Development Scheme.

The goal is to promote the commercial development of aquaculture on financially, technically and environmentally sustainable basis.

Investments may be supported in the construction, extension, equipment and modernisation of production installations, mainly to improve working conditions, hygiene, human or animal health and product quality, reduce negative impact or enhancing positive effects on the environment.

Investments shall add to at least one of the following objectives:

(a) Diversification towards marketable new species and production of species;
(b) Implementation of aquaculture methods substantially cutting negative impact or enhancing positive effects on the environment compared with normal practice;
(c) Support for traditional aquaculture activities important for preserving and developing the economic and social fabric and the environment;
(d) Support for the purchase of gear to protect farms from wild predators;
(e) Improvement of the working and safety conditions of aquaculture workers.

Investment aid will be limited to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, and enterprises with less than 750 employees or with a turnover of less than EUR 200 million

The Measure’s specific objectives are to:

  • Build a critical mass in the production of key species with higher added value potential, particularly salmon and mussels
  • Create additional income and employment in rural areas by endorsing the production of those species with the potential for added volume
  • Support initiatives to improve the sector’s efficiency, safety and competitiveness
  • Promote the diversification of aquaculture via new species
  • Promote new technology to open up offshore locations for aquaculture and improve infrastructural support for the sector.

Applications are to be submitted to the relevant agencies by 20 August. They will be prioritised for financial assistance before being submitted to an external Selection Board for a decision on grant aid.[/li][/list]
