Galicia doubles its exports of farmed trout

During the first quarter of 2010, profits from aquacultural exports in Galicia doubled compared to the same period in 2009, totaling more than EUR 2 million, said the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX).

According to data released by the organisation, the main countries which are importing Galician trout are Russia, which accounted for nearly half the volume of exports, aswell as France, Poland and Germany.

In total, over 2,000 tonnes of trout was shipped out of Galicia in the first four months of the year, mainly to European countries, EFE news agency reported.

Over the same period in 2009, the amount of trout exports were more than 430 tonnes, which means that in terms of value, it represented an increase of almost EUR 1 million.

According to Luz Arregui, president of the Galician Association of Trout Farms (ADSG Atrugal), this increase in sales is "great news" for inland aquaculture in Galicia.

"Over the years we have proved to be an extremely competitive sector, producing high quality trout which is often valued highly beyond our borders, and unfortunately much more than inside them," he said.

But Susana Portela, manager of Atrugal ADSG, said that Turkey encourages "the export of trout at a lower price than it costs in Spain." This means that Galician companies can not compete and "break the rules of competition in Europe," she said, according to the newspaper Faro de Vigo.

According to Portela, Galician trout is highly appreciated outside Galicia. In Spain it is usually consumed fresh, but in other countries it is extremely common to find them frozen or smoked.

ADSG Atrugal is one of the major associations for trout producers in Spain, and a leader in Galicia.

The partnership brings together a total of 25 farms and 19 partners, among which is the largest producer of trout roe, a company dedicated to traditional trout breeding and the leading producer and exporter in Galicia.
