Return of the black tiger

Exports of black tiger shrimp are starting to revive after stumbling for years and losing much of their market to white shrimp. Black tiger shrimp made up more than 85 percent of Thailand's shrimp exports in 2004 at 200000 mt, but exports plunged to 5000 mt in 2008 and 2000 mt in 2009.

The rapid growth and strong productivity of Pacific white shrimp, which can yield 12-18 mt per hectare, led farmers to abandon black tiger shrimp. CP Foods' successful development of specific pathogen-free (SPF) black tiger breeding stock keeps parent breeders free from diseases and produces healthy postlarval shrimp. With biosecure farming, the postlarvae will have strong disease-resistance properties. More importantly, farmers can find a niche by producing large black tiger shrimp, at about 20-25 shrimp per kg compared to 60-70 for white shrimp.

Demand for black tiger shrimp is quite strong in Europe and Japan, with India and Vietnam as major suppliers. The average price of white shrimp of 60/70 count has declined steadily over the past five years from US$3.96 to US$2.96, indicating mismanagement of demand and supply. Hence, management of demand and supply is critical for success of black tiger exports.
