Fresh fish landings continue to fall

SPAIN

Between January and May 2010, 89,436 tonnes of fresh fish entered the ports of Spain. This volume represents a drop of 7.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2009 when 96,933 tonnes were landed, Puertos del Estado reported.
 
According to the report prepared by the entity under the Ministry of Development, in May alone, 17,416 tonnes of fresh fish, 5.6 per cent less than the same month last year (18,430 tonnes).
 
The port of Vigo had the most landings in May: receiving 7,014 tonnes, 9.2 per cent more than during the same month in 2009 (6,418 tonnes).
 
Meanwhile, in the first five months of this year 27,678 tonnes were landed in this important Galician port, 1.7 per cent more than in the same period in 2009 (27,195 tonnes).
 
In second place was the port of A Coruna, with 16,629 tonnes between January and May, a 1 per cent increase over the same period in 2009 (16,457 tons), and then Pasajes, with 8,167 tonnes.
 
The port of Ferrol-San Cibrao registered the largest increase in landings, of 128.3 per cent: it had received only 74 tonnes in the first five months of 2009, and in the same period of 2010, it received 169 tonnes.
 
Ranked behind were the ports of Cartagena, with 472 tonnes, 21 per cent more than in January and May 2009, and Valencia, with 606 tonnes, 20.9 per cent more than the same period last year.
 
According to the latest report, the largest decrease occurred in the port of Ceuta, which received only 5 tonnes of fresh fish in the first five months, 85.7 per cent less than in the same period of 2009 when 35 tonnes was landed.
 
Another port where there was a significant decrease in fresh fish landings was Barcelona: 570 tonnes were landed, compared to 1101 tonnes between January and May 2009, a decrease of 48.2 per cent.
 
In the port of Santander, the drop of fresh fish landings was 45.2 per cent: this terminal had 5,052 tonnes, while in the same period last year there had been 9226 tonnes landed.
