R+D investment gains ground

Several research and development (R+D) centres, both national and foreign, settled in the southern regions of Chile - Los Ríos and Los Lagos - in the last three years, which have become major suppliers to aquaculture enterprises.

Initially, these centres were focused on the salmon industry, but the crisis experienced by this sector caused by the spread of infectious salmon anemia (ISA) forced them to diversify their offerings.

One of the pioneers is ADL Diagnostic Chile Ltda, located in La Vara, 10 kilometres from Puerto Montt. At first it worked as a laboratory for aquaculture, but the needs of its customers made the R+D area became part of the business three years ago, reports Diario Financiero.

According to the manager of innovation at ADL Diagnostic, Marcos Rozas, its main projects are:

Development of an anti-stress, of natural base, in the diet of salmonids in commercial culture stage;
Determination of prevalence of ISA virus and pancreatic disease (PD) in the population of wild and feral fish from lakes in the region with salmon farming;
ADLMag, a diagnostic solution to optimise the control of pathogens in aquaculture.
In August 2007, firm AVS Chile settled in Puerto Varas, composed of three Norwegian institutions specialising in aquaculture research: Nofima, Veso and Sintef Fisheries and Aquaculture.

"We work on demand throughout the value chain for aquaculture. Patent rights generally belong to the contracting company," says Matias Medina, general manager of AVS Chile.

AVS Chile provides for the implementation of public projects:
Creating an outreach centre for the aquaculture industry;
Generation of R+D in engineering and aquaculture technology;
A program for the development and implementation of an epidemiological model of the ISA virus, among others.
"Multinational companies have more experience in R+D contracts, but all are in the same process to generate a culture of R+D," says Rozas.

In addition, the company Aquainnovo was created in 2007, with an investment of USD 10 million, thanks to the contributions of the Corporation for the Promotion of Production (CORFO) and AquaChile, in equal parts.

The manager, Roger Miranda, says that in the field of genetics they were able to improve salmonid growth by between 7 per cent and 10 per cent and tilapia by more than 10 per cent per generation. And in the area of biotechnology, they were able to "develop innovative techniques for pathogen detection using molecular techniques."

Aquainnovo plans to create a research and technology transfer and management software for genetic improvement programs.

Finally, Ewos Innovation settled in Chile in July 2008.

This subsidiary of the Norwegian food company Ewos has a research unit in Colaco (Puerto Montt), whose main objective is to investigate and innovate in the development of fish nutrition and disease prevention in the salmon industry.
