An aquaculture farm located in the province of La Rioja begin producing sturgeon caviar. This is the first venture of its kind in the country and the second in the Southern Hemisphere, as, until now, only Uruguay was doing this.

After the arrival of 50,000 sturgeon eggs at Anillaco Pisciculture Plant, from an Italian farm, the first hatching of eggs began to occur this week. Thus was launched the process of obtaining the sturgeon that are used to produce the caviar.

In March, the governor of La Rioja, Beder Herrera, and the chairman of Russian company Esturiones & Caviar S.A., Facundo Fredes, signed a concession contract for 15 years at Anillaco Pisciculture Plant to produce caviar.

It is expected that a team of biologists from the Federal Institute for Scientific Research in Fisheries and Oceanography, Russia (Vniró) will conduct advising and research in the plant in La Rioja.

Participating in the delivery of the eggs were Fredes; Secretary of Environment of the province, Nito Brizuela; the head of the department Castro Barros, Marcelo Del Moral, and the coordinator of Flora and Fauna, Carlos Cattaneo.

Meanwhile, it was reported that Philippova Olga, a Russian biologist and specialist with 25 years of experience at Vniró, is already working and monitoring the hatching of eggs in Anillaco.

The Rioja Government believes that the initiative will help promote the province of Argentina from the perspective of tourism, as boxes caviar show images of local landscape and the denomination of origin 'Anillaco, La Rioja, Argentina. "

"From the provincial government and the Ministry of Environment and Superintendency of Castro Barros, we always found solutions to problems that arose, so we can not have more than expressions of gratitude to them all," said Fredes, reports Derf.

Today, caviar is also produced in a sturgeon farm installed in Uruguay, by the company Esturiones Río Negro S.A.
