SalmonChile doesn't expect significant growth

In the first quarter of 2010 about 200,000 more units of salmon were placed in the Chilean sea than at the same time last year and are fish are being fattened in 210 centres, a figure slightly higher than the previous year.

These developments signify a major achievement for the sector, but far from portend a dramatic growth, according to the main association that gathers the salmon industry in Chile.

"The major crops of fish do not make us think that there will be an exponential growth in the short term," said the president of the Salmon Industry Association of Chilean AG (SalmonChile), Cesar Barros, in Puerto Montt.

Barros went to that city in the region of Los Lagos to meet with regional authorities and discuss how to implement the amendments to the General Law on Fisheries and Aquaculture (LPGA).

With regard to new legislation, the union president announced that they are working on the formation of associations of concessions or 'barrios' and the application of regulations arising from the Act

"We are happy because most of the 44 measures we have developed in SalmonChile were recognised by the authorities as the base for regulations," said Barros.

In any case, he maintained that along with the Association of Banks and Financial Institutions and Armasur are working on a Health Surveillance Plan that will allow them to monitor "the implementation of sanitary measures" between member companies, reports Aqua.

On the other hand, the general manager of SalmonChile, Carlos Odebret, said he was unaware how the funds were used in the Salmon Plan, created under President Michelle Bachelet, nor its impact.

However, he stressed that the Salmon Net, a program developed by SalmonChile, used USD 70,000 to serve 4,000 people and "relocate more than 1,200 people."

Odebret was also very concerned about the rising violence and robberies occurring in fattening centers and salmon processing plants.

"There are criminals who are carrying out armed robbery and it's threatening the lives of people. This is a serious problem for the sector and country," he added.

It is still being determined who the culprits of the fire suffered by the ex-headquarters of SalmonChile-Intesal in Puerto Montt are.
