The fishermen's associations of the autonomous communities of Northwestern Cantabria will evaluate the possibility of creating a seal of quality that distinguishes the anchovy caught by the fleet against other anchovy.

The main objective of the initiative is to recover the resource price in the market, which dropped to "very low" levels during the season that ended on Thursday 10 June in the Gulf of Biscay.

The representatives of the guilds explained that the seal would serve to identify the origin of processed products, especially canned products.

For business leaders, the low prices during the last campaign of Bay of Biscay anchovy was because it "has lost its market."

In the absence of guarantees on catches that would occur this year, canners opted abstain from this pelagic abroad, which usually has a lower price.

According to the president of the Federation of Fishermen's Guilds of Cantabria, Manuel Vinatea, the seal of quality will help drive the recovery of market value.

Dimas Garcia, president of the Federation of Fishermen's Guilds of Asturias, believes that this seal should be ready by the beginning 2011 to avoid prices as low as those seen at the end of this season.

For his part, President of the Federation of Guilds of Galicia, Benito González, believes that the quality mark would be the "only" way to increase the price of anchovy.

And the president of the Federation of Fishermen's Guilds of Biscay, Iñaki Zabaleta, said that they will work to create a "unified" seal to inform the consumer "what they are consuming."

The Federation of Guilds in Guipúzcoa has not yet joined the initiative. However, the entity is exploring the possibility of supporting it, said his secretary Mirem Garmendia.
