Aquaculture centre of reference inaugurated

BRAZIL
Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 16:30 (GMT + 9)

The Development Company of the Valleys of San Francisco and Parnaiba (CODEVASF), and the state government will inaugurate his Tuesday the Centre of Reference in Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources of San Francisco (CERAQUA/SF), in Real Porto do Colegio.

The federal government invested BRL 8.5 million (USD 4.8 million) in the launch of this new technological and scientific centre.

Several organisations participate in the management of CERAQUA: the Secretariat of State of Agriculture and Agrarian Development (SEAGRI), CODEVASF, the Brazilian Organization for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA), the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL) and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry (MPA).

"This will be the first research centre with shared management. With that, we will be able to optimise financial, human resources and the overlapping of shares," said the coordinator of the Project of Implantation of the new entity, Eduardo Jorge Motta.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of State of Agriculture, Jorge Mooses, assured that the centre's projects will be fundamental in taking advantage of the potential of Alagoas for fish-farming.

"It is 240 kilometres from the San Francisco river, more than 230 km from the coast, the natural dam of Xingo, natural lagoons, and the dam that boosts the activity in the State, ” the official indicated.

For two years, CERAQUA has offered assistance in research that can be of great value for the productive chain of aquaculture and fishing in Alagoas and the rest of the country.

According to Motta, one of the investigations that was developed aims at three varieties of tilapia as the most profitable for the producer and industry.

Besides promoting the delivery of scientific subsidies and achieving the fortification of the productive chain of aquaculture and fisheries, the reference centre will boast a place where the semen of native fish species can be cryopreserved.

"With that centre, we will be able to maintain the genetic bank for the improvement and inclusion in the nature of species threatened by environmental degradation that afflicts the San Francisco river,” Motta added.

The supervisor of Farming Development of SEAGRI, Edson Maruta, mentioned that among the species that could be reintroduced in San Francisco are the sorubim, pacam, a curimbata (xira) and tubarana, Tudo Global reports.
