Thai shrimp exports withstand recession

Ninety percent of the shrimp production in Thailand relies on export. Shrimp is the only agricultural product to record export growth in the first eight months of this year. According to Somsak Paneetatyasai, President of the Thai Shrimp Association, shrimp production is projected to increase by 5% this year to 520 000 mt with exports also up 5% to between 380 000 and 390 000 mt.

Shrimp exports are expected to earn the country THB* 89.25 billion this year, up 5% from THB 85 billion last year. The United States is expected to remain the largest market with about 50-55% share, followed by Japan and Europe at 10-15% share each. The strong exports are attributed mainly to the efficiency and quality of Thailand’s shrimp production.

The government is being urged by the industry to help address the challenges faced, particularly trade barriers such as current anti-dumping measures by the US government targeting Thai shrimp, and allegations about child labour. It is also being asked to manage the baht exchange rate to improve exports and to open new markets to diversify risk.

Thailand has about 22 000 shrimp farmers with 110 000 shrimp ponds covering 480 000 rai (76 800 ha). They produced 495 000 mt of shrimp last year.
