Salmon farming: mln-dollar R+D investment

CHILE

The salmon farming industry has invested CLP 42.03 billion (USD 83.5 million) in the concretion of research and development (R+D) projects around the country, the Salmon Industry Association AG (SalmonChile) informed.

The sector’s primary objective is to emerge from the severe crisis brought about by the outbreak of the infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) virus in 2007, the effects of which continue to be felt.

The new productive structure of Chilean salmon farming is focused on innovation in products, services and technologies.

In less than 10 years the resources allocated to R+D have increased 75 per cent, SalmonChile also mentioned.

Other goals of the 28 companies that comprise the sector include establishing new sanitary and environmental parameters and reducing the presence and transmission of diseases, so that 2010 is the last year of sector decline, emphasised Carlos Odebret, the union’s general manager.

In 2008, when the sector crisis struck, 650,000 tonnes of salmonids valued at USD 2.5 billion were being exported. This year, estimates indicate that only 190,000 tonnes will be sold in the external market.

Several companies receive support from InnovaChile of the Production Development Corporation (CORFO), in an effort to settle issues, improve processes and lower costs.

For example, Aquasaam, of Group CSAV, will soon begin to commercialise a system of continuous pipes for automatic fish feeders, which will guarantee that food does not have breakage or internal scrapes.

Meanwhile, the Innovex company “designed a model of currents, which allows the movement of water masses to be analysed, being able to determine the zones of major or minor risk of contagion and water renovation, the sectors naturally connected or disconnected and the best sectors for the location of productive centres,” indicated Commercial Manager Patricio Catalan.

The Norwegian-funded firm Ewos is developing a diet that will allow it to reduce infestation by sea louse during salmonid fattening. Meanwhile, Gasco is testing a gas incinerator prototype “that allows the daily elimination of dead specimens, discarding any virus or pathogen present, obtaining ash, which is an innocuous residue,” informed Business Unit Head Pablo Contreras.

Rodger Miranda, general manager of Aquainnovo, property of AquaChile, says that the goal of the company is to achieve molecular genetic research improvement.

Next March it will launch the Gen Datasave, software to administer and analyse genetic information.

The Research Centre in Nutrition, Food Technology and Environmental Sustainability of the Region of Los Lagos (Cien Austral), a consortium of universities Austral of Chile and Santiago, funded by CONICYT, and the regional government of Los Lagos, support the development of 20 projects. The same are directed mainly at diversification in the farming of species, sustainable salmonid farming of and new diets.

In other news, the Association of Banks and SalmonChile will invest USD 2.5 million over the next three years to complement the sanitary auditing carried out by the National Fisheries Service (SERNAPESCA) through private sanitary auditors.

Although the creditor banks have already ended all debt refinancing opportunities with salmon farming companies, the financial sector remains worried about the industry’s sanitary development.
